In a significant turn of events within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s internal elections in Namutumba District, State Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Hon. Persis Namuganza, secured the position of Secretary for Finance.

Representing Bukono County, Namuganza triumphed over her opponent, Gusango Samuel, with a decisive 513 votes to 222.

Expressing her gratitude, Namuganza thanked the people of Namutumba and the NRM fraternity for their continued trust. She interpreted her victory as a stand against sabotage, having faced blackmail and derogatory remarks during her campaign.

“The people of Namutumba know that Persis Namuganza, the princess, is genuine, and I always ensure they receive their facilitation from the secretariat,” she remarked.

Namuganza also extended her congratulations to Simon Menya, who was elected as the new NRM District Chairperson. She viewed his election as a clear message from the people of Namutumba, signaling their desire for stability and proper organization within the party structures.

“I want to thank everyone, especially my own league, the NRM youth league, for doing a commendable job, along with the veterans, women, mainstream members, and the disabled. I cannot mention all of you, but thank you so much,” Namuganza expressed in her celebratory speech.

However, the elections were not without controversy. District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Mariam Naigaga, attempted to halt the mainstream election, claiming that the allotted time had expired. Her actions escalated when she allegedly disrupted proceedings by breaking microphones and confronting the Resident District Commissioner (RDC).

NRM District Registrar for Namutumba, Magobi Bovan, expressed his displeasure over Naigaga’s behavior. “She pushed me, grabbed microphones, and threw them away, literally wanting to beat me, but I stood firm,” he stated.

RDC Bango Frederick attributed Naigaga’s conduct to her anticipation of defeat. When it became apparent that she could not alter the outcome, she exited the venue, paving the way for Simon Menya’s victory with 480 votes.

In her concluding remarks, Namuganza highlighted the significance of the election results, stating, “It’s not fair, but we have shown them the power of the people, and that’s the NRM democracy.”

These developments underscore the dynamic political landscape within Namutumba District, reflecting both the challenges and the resilience of its political actors.
