In President Yoweri Museveni’s recent State of the Nation Address, he outlined 32 bills slated for consideration in the upcoming legislative year.
Among these, the Information and Communication Bill, 2023, was prioritized as the second item, underscoring its significance.
This bill, originating from the Ministry of Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance aims to consolidate various existing communication-related statutes into a singular, cohesive legal framework.
Minister Chris Baryomunsi emphasized that the proposed legislation seeks to amalgamate laws such as the Uganda Communications Commission Act, the Computer Misuse Act, the Press and Journalists Act and the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Act.
The initiative is designed to modernize and streamline Uganda’s communication laws, ensuring they align with current technological advancements and media industry practices.
According to Baryomunsi: “The Cabinet has already approved the principles of this comprehensive bill, and it is expected to be presented to Parliament in the forthcoming year”.
