General Taban Amin, son of former President Idi Amin Dada, has joined a growing list of political figures from the West Nile sub-region who have declared their support for President Yoweri Museveni’s re-election in the 2026 general elections, citing peace, stability and development as reasons for his endorsement.

Speaking during an NRM campaigns in Koboko, Taban Amin said West Nile had endured years of war and instability under previous regimes but has since enjoyed lasting peace under President Museveni’s leadership.

“People of West Nile have suffered a lot during Obote I and II. But now, because of President Museveni, peace has come to this land. Before, there were bullets everywhere even I was part of those wars but today, there are no guns, and people are happy,” Taban said.

He praised the President for transforming Uganda from a country once known for producing refugees to one now recognized globally for hosting them.

“Uganda is now a home for our brothers and sisters from Sudan and Congo. The President has opened doors for them, showing the world that we are a peaceful and welcoming nation,” he added.

Taban, however, urged President Museveni to personally visit and interact directly with ordinary citizens in West Nile, saying some local leaders were misrepresenting the region’s needs.
“The people love Mzee, but they are suffering because some leaders are selfish. They think of their stomachs, not the movement. We ask the President to come himself, meet the people, and listen to their real problems,” he said.

Former Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development Zoe Bakoko Bakoru, also voiced her strong support for Museveni, describing him as the architect of peace and development in West Nile.

“There are many reasons why the people of West Nile must vote for Museveni. The peace agreement between UNRF II and the NRM 22 years ago brought stability. Since then, we have roads, schools, hospitals, and electricity. The NRM has done its work, it’s now our turn to give back,” Bakoko said.

She noted that the region is hopeful that the President will address remaining concerns, including upgrading Arua airfield to an international airport, establishing a national referral hospital, and creating additional city divisions to improve local governance.

NRM Vice Chairperson for Karamoja Region, John Baptist Lokii, who was part of the campaign rally in Koboko, said the overwhelming support in West Nile demonstrates the people’s confidence in President Museveni’s leadership.

“Peace is a prerequisite for development, and that’s what the President has delivered. We now have roads, electricity, bridges, and improved livelihoods. The people of West Nile should reward him by voting for him again,” Lokii said.

As the 2026 elections draw closer, the growing wave of endorsements from prominent regional figures signals renewed political momentum for President Museveni in a region once defined by its turbulent past now rallying behind a message of peace and continuity.
